Course Date: Monday 25th March 10.15 - 12.30

Course Location: The Awesome Woods at Snowdonia Donkeys, Ffarm Moelyci, Tregarth.

In Part 1 of this series of bushcraft sessions, the budding adventurer will safely learn the skills to light a campfire without the use of a match (or lighter!). This 2 hour course is for 8 - 15 year olds and led by Huw from Ynys Twca. Huw is a qualified, bilingual teacher who has been running sessions in outdoor classrooms for many years. He believes one of the best ways to learn is by doing and having fun.

What they will do:

  • Learn about fire safety and the do's and don'ts of lighting fires.
  • Gather and prepare materials to make a camp fire.
  • Learn how to prepare a camp fire which will burn safely and efficiently.
  • Use various methods such as flint and steel, bow drill and solar to produce an ember.
  • Nurture the ember to produce a smokeless fire.
  • Learn how to extinguish the fire and leave no trace.
  • Hear stories from the woods.
  • Use a Kelly Kettle to make hot chocolate and toast marsh mallows.
  • Have a fun session in the woods learning new skills and making new friends.

Joining in our series of Bushcraft sessions is a great way for your children to spend time outdoors in nature learning new skills and making new friends. Although the emphasis is on learning and kids enjoying themselves, safety is always a high priority.

The Awesome Woods where the course will be based is owned by Snowdonia Donkeys, a charity which works to help change the lives of both people and donkeys. So it is highly likely that the soundtrack to the session will not only be birds singing but donkeys braying! The sanctuary will be closed to the public on this day but for those on the course, the donkeys will be nearby and you will get a chance to say hello from the other side of the fence!

The course is limited to 8 attendees to ensure everyone gets the most from the session. Although the course is aimed at ages between 8 and 15 years, adults can book on too if they wish to join their children on the course. Non paying parents or guardians are asked to meet with us at the start and walk with us to the Awesome Woods so you know where to collect your children from at the end! We also ask you to stay on the farm during the course and leave a contact number with Huw in case he needs to contact you. During this time you are able to walk around the farm and catch glimpes of some of the donkeys in their fields, visit the farm shop and cafe.

Please note: a minimum of 4 bookings is required in order for the session to go ahead. If the minimum number is not reached, the session will be rescheduled to a later date.

After you have booked a place on the course, you will receive a confirmation email and a link to a file with information about how to find Ffarm Moelyci and what to do when you arrive. Please do contact us in the meantime if you have any questions.

Part 2 will also be held in the Easter Holidays and will be available to book soon. Please get in touch if you would like to receive email updates about when future courses will be held.
